Synopsis: "Blood on his hands, bridges burnt, ancient entities unleashed, the world falling into chaos, and it’s all Frank “Triggaltheron” Trigg’s fault. So what does he do?
He joins the enemy, of course.
Out of options, Frank surrenders to the DSI in hopes of working out a deal that will save DRAC and end the supernatural rebellion he instigated. As it turns out, the punishment for his crimes is the absolute worst thing he could imagine.
They offer him a job.
Now tasked to hunt down the former head of the DSI, Frank is caught up in a chess match that just might determine the fate of the universe.
Who really needs a happy ending, anyway?"
*In full disclosure, Tim Marquitz and I are good friends.
Back in 2010 before SBR was just got started I read a fantastic book called Armageddon Bound and was blown away by the author's ability to tell an urban fantasy story filled with angels and demons and not be focused on romance but instead killing evil with a .45. Needless to say I was awestruck. ten novels and many short stories later and Marquitz is still producing great reads.
Institutional begins shortly after the events in Aftermath. With the DRAC in shambles and his friends being hunted, Frank does the unthinkable and turns himself into to the DSI. Instead of throwing him in a dank and dark hole, they offer him a position as head of the organization. Probably not the best of ideas handing the keys to the kingdom to a reprobate but they do it anyway. Besides Frank sees it as a prison sentence, the idea of being in charge doesn't exactly send a thrill down his spine.
While Institutionalized has a lot of great scenes, I can't help but think that it is a set up to something Marquitz has down the pipeline as Frank receives a visit from dear old dad and he alludes to something bigger on the horizon. Things are left intentionally vague but you can't help but think it will be something epic.
What really makes the book shine is that Institutionalized had the opportunity to really go big and spiral out of control but Marquitz was able to rein it in and really give us a tight story that has quite a bit of action while giving us quick glimpses at what is around the corner. Institutionalized isn't the best novel in the series but it certainly is a solid story that should keep fans of the saga happy until we see where all of this is leading us, something that I can't wait to find out.
Overall 7/10
