Synopsis: "The iconic character Judge Dredd finally received the graphic novel platform he deserved in the Case Files editions.
Since 1977, one man has dominated the British comic scene. He is judge, jury and executioner; a merciless farfuture lawman delivering justice with an iron fist on the mean streets of Mega-City One. He is Judge Dredd! US readers can discover the roots of this legendary character in this vast a thrill-packed series of graphic novels, which collect together all of Dredd’s adventures in chronological order."
Ever since watching Stallone donned the famous helmet in the theater (not so much Rob Schneider), I have enjoyed Judge Dredd. Of course, as I learned more about the character, I learned just how bad Stallone's version of Dredd truly was but I never forgot how iconic the character was and when Karl Urban played the role I became intrigued with the character once again and decided to set out and learn more about him. Luckily 2000 AD has issued graphic novels that trace the characters history chronologically in several volumes.
Volume 1 gives us Dredd's beginnings and many of the stories found within are quite campy and I was a little surprised to find that the famous judge became a famous figure based on these stories. While there are a few hidden gems found within the collection, the majority of stories are not very good. Most stories are only around 2 1/2 pages making for quick reads but for many of the stories that is 2 pages too many as there are quite a few stinkers.
While I have the next two volumes in the series, I haven't read them yet. I am only hoping that they improve and I finally get to see how Dredd became the iconic figure he is today. The Complete Case Files Volume 1 was a little bit of a let down and there are very few story lines that won't have you rolling your eyes at the end but it is nice to see his humble beginnings and it is my hope that in the next volume I will finally see how he became the juggernaut he truly is.
Overall 6/10
