Synopsis: "Before the Batcave and Robin, The Joker and the Batmobile, there was ZERO YEAR. The Riddler has plunged Gotham City into darkness. How will a young Dark Knight bring his beloved hometown from the brink of chaos and madness and back into the light? This final ZERO YEAR volume collects BATMAN #25-27 and 29-33."
The final edition of the Year Zero series and Bruce Wayne's first forays as the Dark Knight has the "World's Greatest Detective" being hunted by Commissioner Loeb and the Gotham City PD, While he is looking for the person behind a string of violent murders all while the city is experiencing a blackout due to a super storm approaching the city. Oh, and then there is Edward Nygma, also known as the Riddler making an appearance. To sum the novel up, it is busy and in my opinion, a little too busy.
I really enjoy Snyder's ability for story telling and I like the looks of Capullo's artwork, however, this particular volume felt like the higher ups required a lot for the last issue's bucket list and somehow these two found a way to cram it all in. While the story makes sense, to a degree, the pacing is all over the place and feels disjointed in some parts.
One major highlight of this volume is we final learn the origins of the giant penny found in the Batcave. But even with that little bi of trivia being dished out, the short-lived series was alright. Not spectacular but as far as origins go, fairly decent.
Overall 6.5/10
