Ever since I first started reading Marvel's excellent Darth Vader series, I have been meaning to read the other side. In Volume 1 Skywalker Strikes, we pick up right after Luke has destroyed the Death Star. Now the rebels are laying low while still trying to hinder the Empire at every turn. The story does a good job of tying things into the events from the movie while setting themselves apart and expanding on the lore.

Perhaps the best part of the comic is that the individual characters actually come off as their silver screen counterparts. Han Solo feels and acts just like he does in the movies. The dialogue feels natural and the action on par with what we know the young rebels are capable of.

One major issue that I have with this comic book is that they bring in Boba Fett, which felt forced. Darth Vader has hired Fett to locate the young pilot who destroyed the Death Star and Fett catches up to Luke on Tatooine where they have a quick scuffle. The problem is that when you watch the movies there is no indication that they ever met before they finally clash on Return of the Jedi. I know that Fett is a fan favorite but you could show his excellent bounty hunting/detective skills and learn the name of the young pilot (Luke) without them ever meeting. Two ships passing in the night would have been just as well, although there wouldn't be a major action scene within the pages of the book.

Skywalker Strikes' artwork is also quite good. The graphic novel is worth picking up and does add to the mythology of the characters. The book was good enough for me to pull the trigger on the next volume, which I will review next week.

Overall 8/10
