2016 Year in Review
My Top 5:
# 5 War God Rising
Tim Marquitz takes a different approach this time around and goes for a more humorous look at fantasy by giving us a dimwit who is attempting to become the new God of War. I still think that Tim is very under-appreciated and overlooked when it comes to his ability to reinvent himself time and time again with his books and this one is no exception as he veers away from his normal Urban Fantasy niche and successfully tries his hand at humorous fantasy.

# 4 The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens by Phil Szostak
A absolute must have for fans of the series as it provides a glimpse behind the scenes at how the visuals were created and modified to bring the movie to life. If you buy one coffee table book this year, I highly recommend this one as it will delight fans of the series and children as the pictures pop right off the page.

# 3 The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis
After World War III a young girl named Elka is taken in by a man who refuses to speak about his past and it just might kill her. Elka must find a way to escape the man and find her parents in the unrelenting wilds of post-apocalyptic British Columbia. I haunting story of cat and mouse that really caught me off guard as I was surprised at how well-written it was and how long it stayed with me. A truly unforgettable debut.

#2 Forgotten Moon
While the book may look intimidating with its ability to double as a doorstop, The Forgetting Moon is an ambitious book that promises to find a place in every grimdark reader's heart. With two armies preparing to clash and possibly bring about the second coming, it is up to five unprepared individuals that could turn the tide.

#1 Red Tide by Marc Turner
This year I ended up reading all of Marc Turner's Chronicles of the Exile series and I am glad I did. I don't think Turner gets the recognition he deserves as he takes traditional fantasy tropes and puts his unique spin on them making for some outstanding reading. If you haven't had a chance to read this series, you owe yourself to give it a go as it is some of the best out there.

Honorable Mention:
In the Stars I'll Find You by Bradley P. Beaulieu
A nice little collection of short stories from my favorite author last year. I was able to get my copy through his Kickstarter campaign and I don't regret it as Bradley covers the gambit of subject matters quite deftly. Also, if you are a fan of his latest series, Songs of Shattered Sands, you get a special treat as you get a tale from that world. Nearly every story is impressive and it was my favorite short story collection I reviewed this year.
