Synopsis: "Ex-CIA master assassin Court Gentry has always prided himself on his ability to disappear at will, to fly below the radar and exist in the shadows—to survive as the near-mythical Gray Man. But when he takes revenge upon a former employer who betrayed him, he exposes himself to something he’s never had to face before.
A killer who is just like him.
Code-named Dead Eye, Russell Whitlock is a graduate of the same ultra-secret Autonomous Asset Program that trained and once controlled Gentry. But now, Whitlock is a free agent who has been directed to terminate his fellow student of death. He knows how his target thinks, how he moves, and how he kills. And he knows the best way to do the job is to make Gentry run for his life—right up until the moment Dead Eye finally ends it…"
I enjoy the Gray man series and I am happy to hear there is also a fifth book available (waiting on the paperback for my collection) as the fourth book in the series, Dead Eye, kept up the pace but added a little wrinkle as a new assassin is on Gentry's trail. An assassin that has been through the exact same training and knows how to think just as he does.
Russell Whitlock is an assassin trained by the CIA and now has his sights on making some serious money, while removing Gentry from the game board. As Gentry goes about his business of staying out of the lime light, the agency finds him using sophisticated facial recognition tech and the chase is on. Whitlock has been added to the hunt but he has his own schemes brewing. this leads to the two dead deadly assassins teaming up so that Whitlock can play his cards.
I don't want to ruin the story for anyone but the author, Greaney, does a great job of weaving Gentry's though process as he slowly learns exactly why Whitlock has decided to help him as we uncover Whitlock's plans for himself. Another big reveal in the book is we finally learn exactly what when down in Kiev that makes Gentry one of the most ruthless and cunning assassins in the game. Dead Eye does a great job of expanding the myth that surrounds Court Gentry while keeping things challenging for him and the reader. I look forward to seeing what he comes up with next. Back Blast, the fifth book in the series is available now if you want to read it before I do.
Overall 8/10
