The second volume in the Darth Vader series picks up right where the last one left off with Darth Vader still looking for his son, Luke Skywalker, while playing the fist of the Emperor, who still doesn't know that Vader knows he lied to him about Padme's death.
As the book opens up when find Vader on Tattoine going through the Lars' family home and learning where Luke was sheltered all those years growing up and how he came to join the rebellion. He sends Aphra to Naboo to find out if Padme died still pregnant or if the son was born before her death. There is still a plot twist in there that anyone familiar with the series will immediately recall as the doctor never admits to the birth of Leia. Not sure why he didn't divulge that information considering the predicament he was in but it does make is so that the reveal in Return of the Jedi makes sense.
Vader is also forced to work with an Imperial Investigator reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes as he takes the smallest of clues and snowballs it into some great insight. Thanoth has an impeccable mind and it is fun to watch him be outmaneuvered by Vader just has he is getting too close to uncovering Vader's plans. Plans that the Emperor wouldn't be too keen on discovering.
The artwork is phenomenal, although there are a few panels that seem to be recycled artwork. Many of the stormtroopers seem to be copies from a previous panel. That aside, the work still seems to bring the action to life.
Sadly, I will have to wait until August to continue Darth Vader's adventures when the next volume is released. Darth Vader volume 2 is a little slower paced with not as much impact as the first book but still worth picking up if you enjoyed the first.
Overall 7.5/10
