Collecting DARTH VADER #1-6."
Ever since my mom took me to see Episode IV in the theater I have loved Darth Vader, when everyone else wanted to be Han Solo or Luke Skywalker, I always dreamed of being the Dark Lord of the Sith. When Marvel gained control of the Star Wars properties the Darth Vader comic immediately received high praise from critics and fans alike. While I have the first 10 issues of this comic, I didn't read them as I wanted to read them when they became available in the graphic novel form. Darth Vader Volume 1 collects the first six comic books in the series and from the first few pages takes you back to the original trilogy.
Volume 1 takes place shortly after events in A New Hope. Vader is interested in learning the identity of the young pilot that blew up the Death Star and was palling around with Obi Wan Kenobi. He enlists the help of the galaxies favorite bounty hunter, Boba Fett, to do that, that is one story arc. The other deals with the Sith rule of two. Vader must create a secret army when he learns that the Emperor has been training his replacement clandestinely and Vader must eliminate the threat. A threat that is much bigger than he expects and has more implications that I don't want to ruin for those that want to read the series. There are some great scenes in the book, especially when he learns just who that rebel pilot is, which sets up the next arc in the series.
Marvel's Darth Vader does a great job of fleshing out Vader's character and motivations as he is not just a weapon you point and set free. He has hopes and dreams and emotions behind that mask and through this series we finally are allowed to see them.
I should also mention that the artwork is stellar. Larrocha does a great job of making every frame have tension. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and his artwork exemplifies it. If you love Star Wars or Darth Vader, this is a must have. Highly recommended.
Overall 10/10
