COLLECTING: SPIDER-GWEN 1-5"

Stacy Gwen was Spider-man/Peter Parker's first love. Her death was heart-wrenching and when I learned that Gwen was not only back but with the powers once only held by Spider-man. I had to wait a while to finally get my hands but finally did as I wanted to know how she returned and just how she came to gain her abilities. While we sort of get an idea of both of those answers, the graphic novel doesn't give us a clear answer and keeps you guessing.

I think the best part of the novel is that it is vibrant with color. The pages leap out at you and hit you with every palette under the sun. Robbi Rodriquez has done a terrific job of setting your eyes ablaze on every page.

The story of Gwen is one that I found myself always behind the curve, while this is suppose to be the first book in the series there seem to be a disconnect. This collection should have included her reappearance to fill in the gap as to how she returned. Instead, we jump right into her life as she deals with her father alive and her job working for Norman Osborn. In fact, Peter Parker is the one who died when he attempted to give himself powers when he learned his girlfriend, Gwen, was the spider. It makes for an interesting story line, but because the story has a few plot holes and the stories contained in the collection jump around a bit, it is hard to get a real fix on the character. And this is the problem with the book. The story is a little jarring as it jumps around from place to place.

While Spider-Gwen is an interesting book to read and puts a new twist on the Spider-man mythos, this collection feels a little inconsistent. If you are a fan of the love affair between Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker but want to see the roles reversed, this is your book. Gwen is a young superhero who has to deal with school, crime, and the loss of her boyfriend.

Overall 6/10
