Synopsis: "More than thirty years ago, Star Wars burst onto the big screen and became a cultural phenomenon. Now the next adventures in this blockbuster saga are poised to captivate old and new fans alike—beginning with the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And alongside the cinematic debut comes the thrilling novel adaptation by New York Times bestselling science fiction master Alan Dean Foster.
Set years after Return of the Jedi, this stunning new action-packed adventure rockets us back into the world of Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2,and Luke Skywalker, while introducing a host of exciting new characters. Darth Vader may have been redeemed and the Emperor vanquished, but peace can be fleeting, and evil does not easily relent. Yet the simple belief in good can still empower ordinary individuals to rise and meet the greatest challenges.
So return to that galaxy far, far away, and prepare yourself for what happens when the Force awakens. . . ."
Star Wars one of my all-time favorite movie series and truth be told a decent Expanded Universe; however, now all of what I previously knew about the a galaxy far, far away is now legend and a new canon is being established. It was the reason I chose to pick up the novelization of the movie, so I could keep abreast of what was going on in the Star Wars Universe and truth be told, was hoping that there would be some hidden insight into just who Rey is.
Almost from the first page the book was disappointing. All of the magic and enthusiasm that I experienced from the movie was sucked out of the book like it was the last drop from Rey's canteen on Jakku. The witty banter, gone. The epic battles and lightsaber duels were written with very little energy. It made for a very frustrating and soul sucking experience. Even the parts that had the theater laughing and cheering were hard to stomach in Foster's retelling. The book read more like a user's manual for a toaster than one of the biggest, most anticipated movie of the year. I do my best at sticking to it when it comes to reviewing novels that I don't care for. However, Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a chore to read. When I ordered this book I also ordered Foster's Splinter of the Mind's Eye, his first Star Wars novel that takes place between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back and I an now starting to dread my decision, it can't be any worse can it?
I am not sure what is wrong with the recent Star Wars book releases as they pick some high profile authors to write the books but so far every Star Wars book that has been released since they reestablished canon has been some of the worst writing I have ever read. If you are thinking about picking up this, or any of the newly released Star Wars books (not including YA books as I can't speak about them) I would strongly suggest that you reconsider. They are horrible. The newly minted Star Wars universe had an opportunity to take everything that the readers of the previous novels love and give it a shot of steroids and so far they have only managed to take what fans love and crap all over it. The Force Awakens novelization is lackluster at best. I suggest you avoid it at all cost.
Overall 2/10
