Synopsis: "It is a secret the Chinese government has been keeping for forty years.

They have found a species of animal no one believed even existed. It will amaze the world.

Now the Chinese are ready to unveil their astonishing discovery within the greatest zoo ever constructed.

A small group of VIPs and journalists has been brought to the zoo deep within China to see its fabulous creatures for the first time.

Among them is Dr. Cassandra Jane ‘CJ’ Cameron, a writer for National Geographic and an expert on reptiles.

The visitors are assured by their Chinese hosts that they will be struck with wonder at these beasts, that they are perfectly safe, and that nothing can go wrong.

Of course it can’t…

GET READY FOR ACTION ON A GIGANTIC SCALE."

Matthew Reilly, what can you say about an author who writes great escapist novels? They are over the top, non-stop action that keeps you reading until late into the night. I have enjoyed every book that he has put out and The Great Zoo of China is no exception.

The novel starts out with the current specialist tragically dying in the zoo and China looking for a new specialist to take over and evaluate the facility. that is where CJ Cameron and her brother come into the picture. CJ works for National Geographic and her brother is her photographer, together they travel the world and help bring awareness of wildlife to the masses. It is the reason that China wants her to write about their glorious new attraction.

I think why this book works is that Reilly has done an excellent job of creating a female lead
character that doesn't fold under pressure and has no problem taking charge when events go south. She is intelligent as well as beautiful and it works perfectly. Reilly is not afraid to have strong females in his books. Mother, from his Scarecrow series is the same way.

If you haven't heard the comparisons for this book it really is very similar to Jurassic Park meets Dragons as the Chinese have unearthed a nest of dragon eggs and have secretly constructed a massive zoo to breed and study the creatures. They are highly intelligent and intensely violent. Due to advancements in technology the zoo has found a way to keep them docile and in most instances, trainable. But on this particular day the dragons have decided that they are no longer going to curtail to human dominance and when it does Cj and her brother must find a way to survive and escape.

The Great China Zoo is action-packed from the get go. Reilly does an excellent job of keeping the infodumps to a minimum and let the action speak for itself. I remember when I read Jurassic Park in high school and devoured it; The Great Zoo of China brought me back to that period of time as I read this book as fast as I could, neglecting to eat lunch so that I could get a few pages further into the story. It is that entertaining. there are a few instances where you will have to hold some suspension of belief but the payoff is worth it. Once again Reilly shows us that he is at the top of his game and that The Great Zoo of China is a place you want to visit. Highly recommended.

Overall 8.5/10
